Teen critics writing notes in the audience of a theater

About Us

The Kansas City Cappies is the local chapter of the National Cappies Program, an educational initiative that celebrates excellence in high school theatre while providing students with authentic opportunities to develop their writing, critical thinking, and leadership skills.

Throughout the school year, student critics attend productions at participating high schools across the Kansas City area. After each performance, they write thoughtful, constructive reviews that are published online, helping to promote local theatre while giving students valuable experience in journalism, arts criticism, and professional writing.

At the end of the season, student critics also participate in selecting nominees and winners for the Kansas City Cappies GAla, recognizing outstanding achievements in acting and technical theatre. The annual awards gala celebrates the dedication, creativity, and talent of thousands of students involved in high school theatre throughout our region.

More than an awards program, Kansas City Cappies is an educational experience that encourages students to engage with the performing arts from a new perspective. Whether participating as a critic or performing on stage, students become part of a vibrant community that values creativity, collaboration, and excellence.
